Approach paper: Transformative climate education
Extreme weather and other impacts of the climate crisis increasingly threaten livelihoods and living conditions worldwide, with growing consequences for education systems.
Climate change disrupts education for millions of children and young people, particularly the most marginalised, including girls. Schools in poorer areas are often located on land vulnerable to floods or droughts, while climate‑driven migration, urbanisation and rising poverty place further strain on education systems. That said, education can also be a powerful driver of change. Transformative Climate Education enables learners to understand climate and environmental challenges, adopt more sustainable lifestyles, and organise for change. To fulfil this role, education systems require strong political commitment, adequate investment, accountability, support for teachers, and space for student activism
