Our work in Kenya
We work to strengthen alliances of young people, women, communities, and journalists in Kenya, enabling them to push for progressive economic reforms and investments in education, gender equality, and the green transition.

Tackling Inequality and Driving Sustainable Change
In Kenya, political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a small elite, while the exploitation of natural resources fuels conflict, poverty, and the loss of economic opportunities.
Together with our partner organisations in Kenya, we work to ensure that the country’s tax revenues are invested in equal access to education, a strong public healthcare system, gender equality, and the green transition.
We also support local communities in responding to the impacts of climate change and in advocating for increased climate financing at both local and national levels.
Strengthening Civil Society for Fair Development and Climate Justice
Oxfam Denmark works to strengthen alliances of civil society, youth, women, communities, and journalists to advocate for progressive tax reforms and propose alternatives to harmful austerity measures. Together with our partner organisations, we push for tax revenues to be invested in equal access to public education, public healthcare, gender justice, and the green transition.
We also strengthen local communities’ ability to act and respond to climate change, while supporting civil society’s advocacy for increased climate financing and green transition plans at both local and national levels.
The combined impact of climate change and the extremely unequal access to quality public education undermines sustainable development and limits people’s ability to participate equally in democratic decision-making.
The hunger and food crisis in Kenya and East Africa are fueled by climate change, COVID-19 and economic inequality, and worsening day by day. Oxfam is calling on all donors to urgently fill the UN humanitarian appeal and to get funds as quickly as possible to local humanitarian organisations.

Strengthening Public Education and Building Resilience
We support broad coalitions of civil society organisations advocating for better quality and increased financing of public education in Kenya, while actively opposing the privatization of the school system. Our goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to free, high-quality education.
Oxfam Denmark also engages in humanitarian responses that strengthen the resilience of local communities facing the ongoing food and drought crisis. We work to improve both local and national preparedness for future crises and emergencies, ensuring that communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from shocks.
Supporting Independent Journalists in Kenya
Investigative journalists in Kenya play a vital role in raising public awareness and drawing political attention to the country’s deep economic inequalities.
They do this by uncovering cases of tax evasion, corruption, and financial crime—bringing critical issues into the public spotlight.
Through our partner organisations, Oxfam Denmark supports these journalists in holding the government and local authorities accountable, advocating for more inclusive and progressive economic policies that benefit all Kenyans, not just the elite.
Our goals in Kenya
- Increase progressive taxation and better social spending influenced by civil society alliances, citizen’s groups, and media
- Improving education based on advocacy for stronger financing of public education and a better policy framework for quality and gender-transformative education
- Improving financing and policies on climate justice and implementation of climate initiatives and practices at a local level
- Providing humanitarian aid including cash transfers for food, access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
